Marshfield City Council Discusses Public Access Television Insurance

Wednesday, October 11th, 2017 -- 8:08 AM

(WDLB) -Marshfield's public access television coordinator has been given until midday Friday to purchase a certain type of liability insurance which would allow certain programs to start airing again.

The Marshfield Common Council voted 7-to-3 last night in favor of directing Tri-Media to purchase "Errors and Omissions Insurance" by noon on Friday. Mayor Chris Meyer said the type of insurance being required would cover the content of community members who volunteer to produce programs for Marshfield Community Television, or M-C-T-V. Certain community-produced programs stopped airing at the start of October, when M-C-T-V's most recent "Errors and Omissions" insurance policy expired. An initial proposal before the Council would've given Tri-Media until November 1st to get the proper insurance in place to cover the content from community producers, but Alderman Tom Witzel said that was way too much time--and he wanted to give the cable TV coordinator a much shorter leash.

The Council vote to give Tri-Media until Friday to secure the necessary insurance was 5-to-5, and Mayor Meyer cast the tie-breaking vote in favor of this week's deadline. There was also some discussion by the Council last night about possibly relocating M-C-T-V to the new city hall, once city government moves into the current Forward Financial building. There was also a brief discussion last regarding whether Tri-Media can broadcast Common Council and other city meetings on Facebook Live as they're happening. The issue was tabled until April of next year.
