Former Clark County Sheriff's Deputy Charged with Sexual Assault

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017 -- 11:07 AM

(USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin) -A former central Wisconsin sheriff’s deputy who resigned last year after USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin revealed he had been accused of rape is now facing criminal charges in connection with those allegations.

Lee Lech stood mute at a court appearance Thursday in Dane County, where he was charged in late September with second-degree sexual assault and attempted second-degree sexual assault stemming from an incident in Madison. He is free on a $1,000 signature bond. The charges stem from Lech’s employment as a deputy with the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, a position he held before abruptly resigning and later taking a job here in Clark County several years ago. He was hired in Clark County by a former coworker who claimed Lech had a clean job history in Oneida County.

After USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin in May 2016 reported the allegations against Lech and the circumstances surrounding his hiring, Lech resigned, Kreitlow retired and Clark County hired a lawyer to look into how Lech got the job. In the wake of the probe, Clark County made changes to how it screens prospective candidates for deputy positions. Lech has a court appearance scheduled for later this month in the criminal case. If convicted, he faces up to 60 years in prison and a $150,000 fine.
