Wisconsin Dairy Cows Produce More Milk in August Compared to a Year Ago

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin dairy cows continue to outdo themselves as they produced more milk during the month of August than they did a year earlier, a feat they accomplished 39 of the last 40 months.According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, state output totaled 2.59 billion pounds last month, up 1.8 percent from August 2016, and fractionally higher than July's production tallies. Nationally, 17 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states for the month, which was 2.1 percent more than in 2016, but less than the previous month's 17.2 billion.
Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.73 million head, 66,000 head more than August 2016, but unchanged from July 2017. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.28 million head, unchanged from both last year and last month. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,025 pounds, up 35 pounds from last year's figures.
