-The City of Owen’s Police Chief has been put on a 30 day administrative leave. The leave of Owen Police Chief Andrew Schade was approved during a closed session of the Owen City Council Meeting on Tuesday, September 12th. According to a newspaper article in The Sentinel and Rural News, the city’s Police Disciplinary Committee met on August 29th and was preparing for a hearing regarding a complaint against Chief Schade on September 13th. However, that hearing was since cancelled due to the leave. It was also suggested that any previous complaints against Chief Schade be looked into. Minutes from past council meetings have hinted at an adversarial relationship between Chief Schade and city officials.
This has also put the Village of Withee in a tight spot as they have contracted with Owen for police patrol and protection. At their council meeting last week, they approved ending their contract with Owen and have looked into other options for a police presence in the village including hiring their own officer or working with the Clark County Sheriff’s Department.
