September 17-23 Is Wisconsin Farm Safety and Health Week

Saturday, September 16th, 2017 -- 6:52 AM

In an effort to remind farmers and motorists to be extra careful during the harvest season, Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed September 17-23 as Wisconsin Farm Safety and Health Week.

Wisconsin Ag Connection reports that a certificate of observance signed by the governor states that people who work on farms face a high death rate--with more than 25 people losing their lives each year because of injuries and fatal incidents on the farm; or on rural roadways while the crops are being hauled in from the fields. The National Safety Council says the fatality rate on farms is six times higher than the combined average for all U.S. workers. And the agency reports that some type of injury occurs on almost one in five Wisconsin farms each year, with more than 80 percent requiring medical attention.

Farm safety specialists recommend that operators equip farm machines with proper safety devices, use personal protection equipment and provide supervision for all those who work on farms. For 74 years, the U.S. has recognized the importance of farm safety and health during the month of September.
