Clark County's Clean Sweep, Final

Thursday, September 14th, 2017 -- 11:29 AM

-The Clark County UW-Extension Office, in partnership with several other county departments, is holding a Clean Sweep Event on September 29th.

I spoke with Melissa Kono and Shawn Ganther about the Clean Sweep. Shawn ended our interview by talking about the medications accepted at the event and the hope that this will help fight opioid addiction.

"We take over the counters. We take unused prescriptions. We do not have a needle disposal site. However, if they do have any unused or used sharps that they're trying to get rid of, Memorial Medical Center will take those. As long as they're in a sealed container. And then they'll dispose of those properly. We are working on getting a sharps container attached to our drop box, but we have to figure out the logistics of it."

"A lot of times, when you have opioid addiction, it has to stem from something. There have been cases where people have had prescriptions from a sports injury and then became addicted. And once that addiction takes over, it's almost like that need to eat. And that's where a lot of the desperation comes in. That's where if they have access to it, they'll get it. I've heard of people putting it in kitty litter to dispose of it. If someones addicted and wants it, they need that fix. Instead of going to get help, they're going to do anything to get it. No quandary about digging through kitty litter to get. They're not thinking this is disgusting, they're thinking I need this fix. So, that's another reason why we promote that and try and get these opioid type medicines out of the cabinets and disposed of."

And you must pre-register by tomorrow for the Clean Sweep and you can do so by contacting the Clark County UW-Extension Office at 715-743-5121. If you don’t, you will be turned away. You can also find more information online, or by calling Extension, regarding the items accepted and the slight cost to some of the items collected. This event is only for Clark County residents and businesses and items will not be accepted beforehand. They will only be accepted on the 29th. The Clark County UW-Extension Office has the right to reject any items that do not meet the guidelines of the Clean Sweep event.
