Clark County's Clean Sweep, Part 6

Tuesday, September 12th, 2017 -- 11:54 AM

-The Clark County UW-Extension Office, in partnership with several other county departments, is holding a Clean Sweep Event on September 29th.

I spoke with Melissa Kono and Shawn Ganther about the Clean Sweep. Melissa finished up by talking about why it’s held in two locations, the need for volunteers and more.

"So, we try to offer it in multiple locations just because we know it's hard for people to be lugging this stuff all over the county. So, that's why we chose Owen and Neillsville. The company that collects the waste asked that we just have two locations. In the past we've had three. We paired it down a little bit."

"We are looking for volunteers for part of the day or all of the day at either one of those locations. We have lots of duties for volunteers whether it's just helping with the collection or helping people find the proper location that they go to drop material off at."

"There are some things that we're not allowed to collect. We can't collect waste motor oil and antifreeze. Automotive garages sometimes have collection efforts available for that. We're not taking regular household batteries. Propane cylinders is one that we get calls about a lot. No explosives, which is ammunition or fireworks. If you have those items that you need to get rid of, you can call here and we'll direct you to the proper place. Any biological waste can't be disposed of here."

"Pre-registration is required just so we can get an idea. It doesn't have to be 100% accurate. If people come across some other things in that time, they can call us and update their registration. It also streamlines the process when people get there of people that we already have registered because we know where to tell them to go because there are different stations set up for each item. We can't take things ahead of time just because Violia, the waste collection company, will only be there during those times and they're the ones that are certified in the hazmat."

Coming up on Wednesday, Shawn will talk about the prescription drug take back aspect of the Clean Sweep. And you must pre-register by September 15th for the Clean Sweep and you can do so by contacting the Clark County UW-Extension Office at 715-743-5121. If you don’t, you will be turned away. You can also find more information online, or by calling Extension, regarding the items accepted and the slight cost to some of the items collected. This event is only for Clark County residents and businesses and items will not be accepted beforehand. They will only be accepted on the 29th. The Clark County UW-Extension Office has the right to reject any items that do not meet the guidelines of the Clean Sweep event.
