UW-Marshfield Professor Holding Lecture on Hate in America Tonight

Tuesday, September 12th, 2017 -- 8:01 AM

(USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin) -Jeffrey Kleiman says any community can harbor the kind of hatred that led to violent and deadly protests last month in Charlottesville, Virginia.

"Very often we imagine such problems are 'other people's' problems," said Kleiman, professor of American History at the University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County. "No place in America is free from prejudice." Kleiman plans to present a lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday called "Taproots of Hate: From Colonial Times to the Alt Right," which will focus on the deep and complex history of hatred in American life and politics.

The purpose of the lecture is for people to learn and understand opposing views in order to bridge the gaps that separate them, according to a news release announcing the event, which is free and open to the public. The lecture will start at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Room 131 at the University of Wisconsin ??" Marshfield/Wood County, 2000 W Fifth St. There will be time afterward for questions and discussion.
