Clark County's Clean Sweep, Part 3

Saturday, September 9th, 2017 -- 6:56 AM

-The Clark County UW-Extension Office, in partnership with several other county departments, is holding a Clean Sweep Event on September 29th.

I spoke with Melissa Kono and Shawn Ganther about the Clean Sweep. Melissa explained why you need to pre-register for the event.

"One of the reasons for that is we do need to tell Violia how much waste we're expecting that day just so that they can plan. There's a lot of special equipment and staff that goes into collecting that waste. So, we need to know ahead of time what that might be. So, people need to call ahead now. We don't need a precise breakdown, but just an estimate if people think they're gong to be bringing in agricultural chemicals, paint or other household waste chemicals. Just an estimate. And then appliances and electronics will be recycled that day too. Prescription meds which is not necessary to have a count unless somebody has a lot on hand that needs to be accounted for. Tires too. If people call and register ahead of time and then find more things to bring in, that's fine, but just have an idea to going into it. And they can just call our office. We do have brochures available, but if somebody can't get their hands on a brochure they can call and we can walk them through it."

Coming up on Sunday, Melissa will talk about the items accepted at the event. And you must pre-register by September 15th for the Clean Sweep and you can do so by contacting the Clark County UW-Extension Office at 715-743-5121. If you don’t, you will be turned away. You can also find more information online, or by calling Extension, regarding the items accepted and the slight cost to some of the items collected. This event is only for Clark County residents and businesses and items will not be accepted beforehand. They will only be accepted on the 29th. The Clark County UW-Extension Office has the right to reject any items that do not meet the guidelines of the Clean Sweep event.
