Clark County's Clean Sweep, Part 2

Friday, September 8th, 2017 -- 10:48 AM

-The Clark County UW-Extension Office, in partnership with several other county departments, is holding a Clean Sweep Event on September 29th.

I spoke with Melissa Kono and Shawn Ganther about the Clean Sweep. Melissa explained how the Clean Sweep is being funded and why they’re not held more often.

"This is a really costly event. It costs between $20,000 and $25,000 to put on this one day event. And we get calls all the time about when are we having a clean sweep? Can you have a clean sweep more often? The county does budget money to hold this event, but then I also wrote a grant to DATCP and we received about $10,000 to help with the cost of it. However, the way those funds are delegated is that counties are only eligible every couple of years, which is why we tend to try to have an event every two to three years, so we can utilize that state money that's available."

"We'd like to have it more often just because it's important to keep some of these chemicals contained and disposed of properly. But, it's just a really costly event to put on. There's lots of labor that goes into it. It's the Extension Office, Planning and Zoning, the Highway Department, Emergency Management, the Health Department, Land Conservation, the Sheriff's Department, Forestry and Parks is involved, so a lot of county offices help with the planning and also have staff that are there that day to. So, it is an expensive program to run even with that grant funding."

Coming up on Saturday, Melissa will explain why you must be pre-registered for the event. And you must pre-register by September 15th, for the Clean Sweep and you can do so by contacting the Clark County UW-Extension Office. If you don’t, you will be turned away. You can also find more information online or by calling Extension regarding the items accepted and the slight cost to some of the items collected. This event is only for Clark County residents and businesses and items will not be accepted beforehand. They will only be accepted on the 29th. The Clark County UW-Extension Office has the right to reject any items that do not meet the guidelines of the Clean Sweep event.
