State Milk Production Hovering Just Above Last Year

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The amount of milk being produced on Wisconsin dairy operations is still just over what they were a year earlier.According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, state output totaled 2.58 billion pounds last month, up 0.7 percent from July 2016, and more than June's 2.54 billion pounds. Nationally, 17.2 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states for the month, which was 1.9 percent more than in 2016, and higher than the previous month's 16.9 billion.
Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.73 million head, 72,000 head more than July 2016, but 1,000 less than June 2017. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.28 million head, unchanged from both last month and last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,025 pounds, up 15 pounds from last year's figures.
