(WDLB) -Marshfield Clinic says it will spend over 60-million dollars over the next five years on renovating and updating the former St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. The figures came out last night, as the Marshfield Common Council voted 9-to-nothing in favor of granting the Clinic's request to declare the hospital to be blighted, as defined by state law. Mayor Chris Meyer said the blighted designation would allow the Clinic to be eligible for lower-interest loans to secure funding for a significant reinvestment in the hospital. City Administrator Steve Barg said the blighted designation should in no way give anyone the idea that the hospital is not safe for medical treatment.
Marshfield Clinic has identified five areas where it wants to make an immediate investment of 28-million dollars in the next 15 months. Those areas include an update to the catheterization lab that is currently non-operational, the purchase and installation of state-of-the-art M-R-I equipment, a modernization of Information Technology, the installation of a new pharmacy dispensing system, and the replacement of the revolving front door at the emergency department entrance. Beyond those areas, the Clinic says it has developed long-range improvement plans for existing vacant building space, and the repurposing of vacant land around the hospital which could be redeveloped. All told, the hospital has eight buildings totaling 964-thousand square-feet on 22 acres.
