EPA Releases Proposed Renewable Volume Obligation for 2018

Friday, July 7th, 2017 -- 8:07 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The Environmental Protection Agency this week has released its proposed renewable volume obligation for 2018 under the Renewable Fuel Standard.

The agency would like RVOs require 19.24 billion gallons of renewable fuels in 2018 and calls for 19.24 billion gallons of total renewable fuel, including 238 million gallons of cellulosic biofuel, 2.1 billion gallons of biomass-based diesel and 4.24 billion gallons of advanced biofuel. Wisconsin BioFuels Association President Erik Huschitt joined many of the nation's ethanol and biodiesel groups in praising the announcement. He adds that Wednesday's announcement suggests the EPA understands the success of the RFS and that it is important to work together to grow the use of these domestically produced, clean-burning alternative fuels.

The EPA indicates that it is proposing to reduce the required volume of all the fuel categories except biomass-based diesel due to an anticipated shortfall cellulosic biofuel production. The agency also noted the proposed biomass-based diesel volume exceeds the statutory minimum and the proposed volumes of total renewable fuel, advanced biofuel, and cellulosic biofuel would achieve the implied statutory volumes for conventional biofuel and non-cellulosic advanced biofuel.
