Wisconsin's Dairy Herds

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -It appears that Wisconsin will soon fall below the 9,000 mark when it comes to the number of registered dairy herds in the state.The state's agriculture department announced there were 9,046 herds milking in Wisconsin during the first week of July. That's a drop of 471 from the same month a year ago. Clark County continues to hold the highest number of herds in the state with 840, followed by Marathon County with 544. Forest, Florence and Milwaukee Counties each have just one herd left.
Despite having less herds, the state's remaining dairy operations are still milking over 1.28 million head and produce a record amount of milk. DATCP records show that 88 percent of state dairy operations are Grade A certified, with 12 percent licensed as Grade B.
