Wood County Sheriff's Department Warns About Scam
Thursday, June 29th, 2017 -- 10:12 AM
-The Wood County Sheriff’s Department is reminding residents to be wary of scams. The department has received several calls from residents reporting scams. In the scam, a person calls claiming to be from a debt recovery company and state that they have outstanding debts and if they’re not paid immediately, they’ll be arrested. The scams seem legitimate as the caller I.D. displayed on the phone says it’s from the Wood County Sheriff’s Department or the Wood County Clerk of Courts. This is done by using a program that allows you to change what the outgoing number looks like.
The Sheriff’s Department wants to remind residents that a government agency will never call you and demand money over the phone. Use extreme caution and when someone attempts to pressure you into payment. They may use threats of fines, arrest, physical harm or others in an attempt to intimidate you. If you receive a call like this, just hang up and contact local law enforcement.
