City of Marshfield to Help Pay for Construction of Permanent Pet Shelter

(WDLB) -The City of Marshfield will be a financial player in the construction of a permanent pet shelter facility. The Common Council voted 7-to-3 last night to help build the facility, on property which the Marshfield Area Pet Shelter now wants to buy from the city. MAPS President Karen Rau was elated with Tuesday night's vote, which she said was just one more example of the city's ongoing support. What's not clear at this point is the amount of the city's contribution to the pet shelter construction cost, which is estimated at one-point-three million dollars. City Administrator Steve Barg said the city's level of participation would hinge on the final purchase price for two-and-a-half acres of land which the city had been leasing to MAPS, but which the non-profit organization now wants to buy.
Meanwhile, city staff will develop a purchase agreement with MAPS for the parcel of property in the Air Industrial Park that has been identified as the site of the new pet shelter. MAPS first approached the city three years ago about donating to the pet shelter project. The planned facility would be able to house 20 dogs and 40 cats at any one time. And MAPS does have contracts with the city for housing both stray dogs and cats. The current MAPS goal is to construct the 77-hundred square-foot facility in 2019.
