(WDLB) -Marshfield aldermen say they will try to find a new development for the existing City Hall Plaza building downtown, after they found out last week the current proposal fell through. The Marshfield Common Council last night had its first chance to react to the recent news that Milwaukee-based Gorman and Company was pulling the plug on its proposal to renovate the former Marshfield Clinic and Figi's headquarters into downtown apartments. Alderman Ed Wagner said the city should remain committed to providing another housing option. Alderman Tom Witzel wants to open up the city's options to include any development.
Mayor Chris Meyer said time is somewhat of the essence, since city government has already agreed to buy the current Forward Financial Bank building next door as its future home. The Mayor said that city staff would likely come back with a recommendation on how to proceed at the Council's next meeting June 13th. Gorman pulled its apartment proposal because the company was unable to acquire historic state tax credits to make the project affordable for them. Gorman's proposal called for 40 apartments, while still maintaining the retail space on the first floor.
