Monday, May 22nd, 2017 -- 8:05 AM
(WDLB) -First Lady Tonette Walker stopped in Marshfield on Friday, as part of a statewide tour discussing better ways to treat the various traumas that children deal with.Walker went to Marshfield Clinic's Child Advocacy Center, to learn what health care workers there are doing to identify, respond to and treat children who suffer trauma caused by physical or emotional abuse. Walker is traveling around the state as part of her "Fostering Futures" initiative, trying to change the face of how pediatric trauma is recognized, and eventually dealth with. Marshfield Clinic has been working on that for years, through its Child Advocacy Center. The C-A-C has developed what it calls a "roadmap to a resilient community", which Mrs. Walker was very interested in taking back to her Fostering Futures program.
Over the past year, the center has seen record increases in the number of children served. The C-A-C served more than 240 children last year, a 60-percent increase over 2015. The center serves a 19-county area of central and northern Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Tonette Walker's tour continued Saturday, with a stop in La Crosse. She was in Marshfield, Wausau, and Milwaukee on Friday.
