Marshfield Professional Police Association Holds Peace Officer Memorial Day Ceremony

Thursday, May 18th, 2017 -- 9:05 AM

(WDLB) -Marshfield honored a retired police officer last night, along with two current members of the force, and the only member of the department ever killed on the job.

The Marshfield Professional Police Association held its annual Peace Officer Memorial Day ceremony last night, at the Marshfield Middle School cafeteria. Sergeant Dennis Keffer organized the event, held each year on the campus which includes Beell Stadium, named in honor of former Marshfield Police officer Fred Beell, who was killed in the line of duty while responding to a burglary at the Marshfield Brewery on August 5th of 1933. Sergeant Keffer also remembered the three Wisconsin police officers who died in 2016. They were among 143 police officers who died in the line of duty last year--including 64 who were killed by firearms.

Also last night, recently retired officer Nick Poeschel was awarded the annual Fred Beell Service Award. And Lieutenant Travis Esser presented fellow officers Tanner Gruber and Josh Larsen with the department's 2017 Valor Awards. Larsen and Gruber were recognized earlier this month at the Wisconsin Professional Police Association's convention, where they received a meritorious award. Also last night, Lieutenant Darren Larson awarded Detective Derek Iverson with the department's Employee of the Year award.
