Wisconsin Farmers Finally Getting Dry Weather

Tuesday, May 9th, 2017 -- 8:01 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin farmers are finally getting dryer weather, but the ground is still a bit cold for the first part of May.

The latest crop/weather report from the state's agriculture department said virtually all of the topsoil moisture levels are rated between adequate to surplus, with subsoil moisture rated 74 percent adequate and 25 percent surplus. As of Sunday, just over a third of the state's spring tillage had been completed. That's about 13 days behind last year and nearly a week later than the five-year average.

Corn planting was 15 percent complete, 10 days behind the previous growing season and six days slower than normal. Soybean fields are just now getting planted; and about half of the oats are finally in the ground. Reporters say the winter wheat crop was 70 percent in good to excellent condition statewide, compared to 64 percent good to excellent a week earlier.
