Clark County UW-Extension Office Measuring Forage Quality

Sunday, May 7th, 2017 -- 6:54 AM

-Clark County supports about 158,000 head of cattle and calves, which includes about 70,000 dairy cows.

Forage quality is important for a sustainable livestock industry. To assist farmers, Clark County UW Extension Crops and Soils agent Richard Halopka will be measuring forage quality beginning May 15th at four locations in Clark County to identify the changes in forage quality prior to the first cutting of hay in 2017. Using the Prediction Equations for Alfalfa Quality stick to estimate the current relative feed value of the growing alfalfa, farmers can estimate when the first cut hay harvest should begin. These results will be reported to the state website, Clark County’s website and WAXX radio. If you would like the fourth option is to dial 715-743-5124 and listen to the current message for PEAQ stick results that week.

PEAQ stick readings will occur twice a week until first cutting begins. If you have questions about PEAQ stick measurements or alfalfa management please call Richard Halopka, Clark County UW-Extension, Crops & Soils Agent at 715-743-5121 or [email protected].
