Marshfield Common Council Hears Proposal on Housing Incentives

Wednesday, April 26th, 2017 -- 9:08 AM

(WDLB) -Marshfield aldermen may decide to offer incentives to build houses on vacant lots in the city.

The Marshfield Common Council last night heard about a proposal from city Development Director Jason Angell, which would have the city, the Economic Development Board, Marshfield's utility and wastewater departments and Wood County offer money upfront for home builders, and those costs would be paid back over time through taxes and monthly utility bills once the new homes are up-and-running. Angell said a 2014 housing study identified a need for single-family homes in the 125-to-200-thousand dollar price range. And he's also identified over 200 vacant residential lots in the city--and more than 80-percent of them are available for development.

Angell is looking for the investing partners to contribute nearly 300-thousand dollars over the next two years, including 100-thousand dollars from the city of Marshfield and over 60-thousand dollars from Wood County. Angell says the Marshfield Residential Incentive Program is set to launch on June 1st. He will be asking for the city's portion of the funding as part of the 2018 budget process this fall.
