Weather Not Cooperating With Wisconsin Farmers

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Cold overnight temperatures and continued precipitation have caused farmers to get even further behind in their spring fieldwork.The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service noted in its weekly crop report on Monday that a few clear days did help some areas of the state dry out, while other fields in the north actually saw frost. Reporters noted that winterkill in alfalfa and hay fields was becoming evident. For producers that were able to get their tractors out, they kept busy spreading manure and planting oats and potatoes. There were even a few reports of corn being planted in southern portions of the state.
As of Sunday, topsoil moisture conditions were rated one percent short, 63 percent adequate and 36 percent surplus. The summary indicated that spring tillage was 13 percent complete statewide--about a week behind last year and five days short of the five-year average. Corn planting has begun with one percent of the crop now in the ground, while 19 percent of the oats are sowed. And winter wheat was 64 percent in good to excellent condition statewide.
