-February is American Heart Month and it’s also National Wear Red Day-Go Red for Women.According to the American Heart Association, heart failure is on the rise and cardiovascular diseases are the nation’s leading killer. National Wear Red Day is held the first Friday in February to bring awareness to the shocking statistics regarding heart disease in women. I spoke with Rebecca Rosandick, the Health Educator and Public Health Specialist with the Clark County Health Department, and she talked about some of the risks of getting heart disease and how you can combat them.
"Well, some of the risks factors can be genetic. If it runs in your family. Having a diet high in salt or sodium intake. Also, having a diet that is high in saturated fat. So, if you want to counter this you can make choices like lean chicken, turkey, fruits, vegetables, low fat yogurt. It's also a good idea to get your blood pressure checked annually by your doctor. Smoking can increase your risk of a heart attack or heart diseases."
Coming up on Tuesday, Rebecca will talk about some of the symptoms of a heart attack.
