More Farm Groups Support "DAIRY PRIDE" Act

Monday, January 30th, 2017 -- 8:01 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin says her 'DAIRY PRIDE' Act continues to pick up endorsements from prominent farms groups.

The newest of those supporters include the Wisconsin and American Farm Bureau organizations. The Wisconsin Democrat introduced the legislation earlier this month, which requires products made from nuts, seeds, plants and algae to no longer be marketed with terms like milk, yogurt or cheese. The acronym stands for: The Defending Against Imitations and Replacements of Yogurt, milk, and cheese to Promote Regular Intake of Dairy Everyday Act. American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall adds that the term 'milk' has a reputation that should not be falsely appropriated by marketers of non-dairy products.

As part of the measure, the Food and Drug Administration would be required to report to congress two years after enactment in order to hold the agency accountable. Other ag groups in support of the bill include Associated Milk Producers, Wisconsin Dairy Products Association, National Milk Producers Federation, FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative, Midwest Dairy Coalition, Wisconsin Farmers Union, National Farmers Union, Cooperative Network, Dairy Business Milk Marketing Cooperative and many others.
