WI Milk Production

Sunday, January 29th, 2017 -- 9:40 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Milk production during the final month of 2016 was up once again in the Dairy State.

According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, Wisconsin farmers produced 2.52 billion pounds of milk last month, up 1.7 percent from December 2015, but lower than November's 2.41 billion pounds (which had one less day on the calendar). This marks the 32nd consecutive month that total output has exceeded previous year figures in Wisconsin. Nationally, 16.8 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states, which was up 2.4 percent higher than in 2015, but less than the previous month's 16.5 billion.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.69 million head, 53,000 head more than December 2015, and 10,000 head more than November 2016. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was nearly 1.27 million head, about 1,000 less than last year, but 1,000 more than December September 2016. Monthly production per cow averaged 1,970 pounds, up 35 pounds from last October.
