-February is American Heart Month and it’s also National Wear Red Day-Go Red for Women.According to the American Heart Association, heart failure is on the rise and cardiovascular diseases are the nation’s leading killer. National Wear Red Day is held the first Friday in February to bring awareness to the shocking statistics regarding heart disease in women. I spoke with Rebecca Rosandick, the Health Educator and Public Health Specialist with the Clark County Health Department, and she talked about some of the conditions of heart disease.
"Actually, heart disease can refer to both the heart and blood vessels. So, many of the problems related to heart disease is due to plaque building up along the walls of the arteries. And this causes the arteries to narrow, which makes it more difficult for blood to flow through. And at the same time, while all this is happening, if a blood clot forms, it can impede or stop the blood flow, which can cause a heart attack or stroke. The types of heart disease, you can have heart failure, in which your heart stops beating. Arrhythmia which is an abnormal hear rhythm. And heart attack and valve problems."
Coming up on Monday, Rebecca will talk about some of the risks of getting heart disease and how you can combat them.
