Cancer Clear and Simple Workshop, Part 2

Monday, January 16th, 2017 -- 11:33 AM

-The Clark County UW-Extension and Clark County HCE are holding a “Cancer Clear and Simple” workshop on Tuesday, January 24th.

The workshop is being held at the Clark County Courthouse, in the auditorium, from 10am-12pm. I spoke with Nancy Vance, the Family Living Agent, and Melissa Kono, the county CNRED Agent, about the workshop. Nancy and Melissa explained the seminar in more detail and stated that people have more control over cancer prevention then they think.

Nancy: "The Cancer Clear and Simple curriculum consists of three related but distinct educational modules. The cancer basics, cancer prevention and cancer screening. Each module provides accessible information while incorporating an easy to understand use of medical concepts and vocabulary. Because sometimes the terminology can be confusing to people, so they've really written in a way that it's clear for everybody to understand."

Melissa: "I think that was one of the most interesting things in the training, is looking at just how much of a factor things that are within our control such as diet and not using tobacco. Those are the two most common causes of cancer and the two top risk factors. And I think that people have this assumption that they're predisposed to getting cancer. Well, family history actually only accounts for about 2% and so, I think, that when people realize they have more control then they think that it's not something that happens to everyone, but something that is in someone's control. Now certainly there are people who are affected with cancer that was out of their control. I would never say that, but things like diet and avoiding tobacco are the most important things."

Coming up on Tuesday, Nancy and Melissa explained what they hope people will take away from the seminar.
