Cancer Clear and Simple Workshop, Part 1

Friday, January 13th, 2017 -- 11:40 AM

-The Clark County UW-Extension and Clark County HCE is holding a “Cancer Clear and Simple” workshop on Tuesday, January 24th.

The workshop is being held at the Clark County Courthouse, in the auditorium, from 10am-12pm. I spoke with Nancy Vance, the Family Living Agent, and Melissa Kono, the county CNRED Agent, about the workshop. First, they explained the grant they received that allowed them to do this workshop and the factors that helped them qualify for it.

Nancy: "This project is a collaborative effort between the UW-Wisconsin Extension, Family Living Programs and University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center. The duel purposes for this project are to increase understanding and skills of rural residents to make informed decisions related to cancer prevention and treatment while building capacity in health focused coalitions to addressed rural health disparities. So, Clark County was identified as one of the 33 counties in the State of Wisconsin that has a higher than normal rate of cancer. And so to over come this, the Carbone Cancer Center partnered with Extension to outreach to these communities and offer some type of cancer educational program that deals with prevention and risk and early detection and just a general understanding of what cancer is."

Melissa: "I think that one of the reasons that we were asked to participate in this is because Clark County does have a higher rate of cancer diagnosis among all sorts of cancers than other parts of the state. One of the things that we tend to be off the charts on is melanoma and the conclusion that we've reached is that it's probably due to the large farming community."

Coming up on Monday, we’ll hear more about the seminar.
