Thirty-One Months & Counting for Milk Production Gains

Sunday, December 25th, 2016 -- 9:41 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Make that 31. That's the number of consecutive month that total milk output has exceeded previous year figures in Wisconsin.

According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, the Dairy State produced 2.41 billion pounds of milk last month, up 2.2 percent from November 2015, but lower than October's 2.49 billion pounds (which had one extra day on the calendar). Nationally, 16.1 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states, which was up 2.6 percent higher than in 2015, but less than the previous month's 16.5 billion.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.67 million head, 33,000 head more than November 2015, and 4,000 head more than November 2016. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was nearly 1.28 million head, about the same as last month, but 3,000 fewer than a year ago. Monthly production per cow averaged 1,890 pounds, up 45 pounds from last November.
