Marshfield City Council Adds Exemption with Motorists and School Buses

Wednesday, December 14th, 2016 -- 8:02 AM

(Mike Warren, WDLB) -Marshfield aldermen are adding an exemption to when motorists would have to stop for school buses which are picking up or dropping off youngsters.

The Common Council voted unanimously last night to exempt school bus operators from a new state law requiring them to activate their flashing red or amber warning lights under certain circumstances. Police Chief Rick Gramza was asking for the exemption, noting that traffic was having to stop for five minutes or longer at certain bus stops involving special-needs kids or stops along Central Avenue.

During the stops which are prolonged, Gramza says the thought is that school bus hazard lights would be on, but not the flashing red or amber lights--and the exemption deals primarily with children beng picked up or dropped off on the same side of the street as the bus. Under the exemption granted last night, Gramza will have the authority to issue exemptions annually, on a case-by-case basis.
