Senator Baldwin Reiterates Her Support of Delisting Gray Wolves from Endangered Species List

Sunday, December 11th, 2016 -- 6:44 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin reiterated her support for legislation that would delist the Western Great Lakes population of the gray wolf from the Endangered Species List, and then pass the management of those animals back to their respective states.

On Thursday, the Wisconsin Democrat said she's urging leaders in her own party to remove the protections placed on wolves after a federal judge reinstated them two years ago at the request of animal rights groups. In recently months, several Wisconsin lawmakers have been publicly prompting Baldwin to press her party colleagues to delist wolves in Wisconsin and other states.

Congress has been working to resolve differences between the Senate and House energy bills, which were passed earlier this year. The House-passed bill included the provision to delist the wolf and the issue could be resolved with the passage of the final energy bill. Prior to 2014, states were given the authority to regulate wolf populations, which prompted Wisconsin to offer a limited hunting season for the animals.
