Tomah VA Dentist Resigns
Monday, December 5th, 2016 -- 8:01 AM
(WDLB) -The dentist who failed to properly follow health and safety guidelines at the Tomah V-A medical center has resigned. The resignation was received on Friday, and came just one business day before a Summary Review Board hearing was supposed to be held on Monday. But acting Tomah V-A Director Victoria Brahm said she and other officials would not stop doing all they could to ensure those responsible for the breach of patient trust are held accountable.
The hospital that was heavily criticized two years ago for prescribing too many painkillers is now telling almost 600 patients that a dentist may have infected them with hepatitis or H-I-V because he kept using his own equipment rather than sterile and disposable items as required by V-A policy. All veterans who've been notified of the matter should take advantage of free medical screenings, and free treatment if they test positive. A toll-free hotline has been set up to arrange follow-up testing. That number is 1-888-598-7793, and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
