Wisconsin Lawmakers Asking to Have Wolves Delisted Again

Friday, December 2nd, 2016 -- 9:56 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Two rural Wisconsin lawmakers want U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin to put her money where her month is by pressing her Democratic colleagues to delist wolves in Wisconsin and other states from the Endangered Species List.

State Sen. Tom Tiffany of Hazelhurst and Rep. Adam Jarchow from Balsam Lake released another statement this week calling on Baldwin to help approve the North American Energy Security and Infrastructure Act of 2016, which includes delisting language. Last month, Baldwin stated that she has called on 'Congressional leadership and my colleagues in the United States Senate to pass legislation to delist the wolf and return management to the state by the end of this year.'

Tiffany and Jarchow organized the Great Lakes Wolf Summit in Wisconsin earlier this fall. They also asked Baldwin to take action on the issue in early November after Sen. Ron Johnson and Rep. Reid Ribble introduced a bill earlier this year to remove those protections in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Wyoming. The lawmakers say the population of wolves in Wisconsin alone has ballooned to almost 900 animals.
