Wisconsin Wins Program, Part 4

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016 -- 11:17 AM

-The Clark County Health Department has completed their Wisconsin Wins checks for 2016.

I spoke with Rebecca Rosandick, the Health Educator/Public Health Specialist with Clark County, and she explained why these tests are conducted.

"Obviously, coming from a health department perspective, we want to keep our youth healthy and we want to decrease access to tobacco. Multiple studies have shown that, over time, the longer that somebody uses tobacco the more potential detrimental health effects it can have in the long run. Going back to our YRBS data, so our Youth Risk Behavior Survey data, that we did back in 2014. If people aren't familiar with that, we contact the school and the schools administer a survey to some of their students in certain grades."

"In 2014, we had 585 high school students complete the survey. And I can tell you percents of some of the questions that were related to tobacco. For example, in Clark County in 2014, about 28% of the students said that they had tried smoking or smoking a cigarette or smoking something with tobacco in it. That's one out of four students if you think about it. There are about 8% of students who said that they smoked a whole cigarette before the age of 13 years. By keeping tobacco out of the hands of youth, we don't want them to become addicted throughout their lifetime if we can prevent it."

Coming up on Wednesday, Rebecca will explain that these tests are not meant to penalize, but thank retailers.
