Wisconsin Dairy Producers Continue Milk Production Streak

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The streak continues for Wisconsin's dairy farmers.

According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, the Dairy State produced 2.49 billion pounds of milk last month, up 2.5 percent from October 2015, and higher than September's 2.44 billion pounds. This marks the 30th consecutive month that total output has exceeded previous year figures in Wisconsin. Nationally, 16.5 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states, which was up 2.7 percent higher than in 2015, and more than the previous month's 16 billion.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.67 million head, 31,000 head more than October 2015, but 2,000 head less than September 2016. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was nearly 1.28 million head, about 2,000 less than last year, but about the same as September 2016. Monthly production per cow averaged 1,950 pounds, up 45 pounds from last October.
