Clark County 4-H Volunteers In Hall Of Fame

Saturday, November 19th, 2016 -- 7:36 AM

Clark County 4-H volunteers Janice and Jerry Micke were recognized for outstanding service and inducted into the Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development Hall of Fame during a ceremony at Green Lake Conference Center on Saturday, Nov. 5.

The Mickes generously gave their time to 4-H and their community for nearly 40 years while raising Suffolk sheep on their family farm. Jerry started a “managerial” project for youth who were unable to purchase a lamb to show or were logistically unable to raise a lamb at their residence. He sold lambs at a reasonable price to 4-H youth in seven surrounding counties, backing up the transaction with solid support in raising the lambs: he shared feed ration and sheared many lambs prior to county fairs. Jerry remains a 4-H Leader in Clark County after 39 years of service. He continues to share his knowledge with students on sheep, as well as pumpkins and gourds at his pumpkin patch.

Jan, who passed away January 31, was general leader of the North Fork 4-H Club and enthusiastically taught youth how to sew, crochet, grow houseplants, work with ceramics, and other craft projects. She organized the baking contest for area 4-H members. Jerry is active in the Reseburg Ramblers and the North Fork 4-H Clubs. He serves on the Clark County 4-H Livestock Committee, the Clark County Sheep Committee, and is integral in initiating the sale of sheep at the Clark County Fair Livestock sale. The Mickes volunteered at St. Bernard’s/St. Hedwig’s Parish. They were honored with the Thorp Senior Farmer of the Year Award. Jan and Jerry raised three children who remain active with 4-H, with eight grandchildren, seven of whom are currently enrolled in 4-H.
