Diet Tips from Memorial Medical Center Registered Dietician Ben Mohr, Part 9

Thursday, November 17th, 2016 -- 11:08 AM

-When it comes to a proper diet, navigating all the different roads of information can be difficult.

I spoke with Ben Mohr, Registered Dietician at Memorial Medical Center, and he answered some common questions people have when it comes to their diets. Ben talked about the health benefits of steel cut oats versus old fashioned or quick oats.

"Awhile ago, I heard that the steel cut oats were better for you. So, I kinda looked into that one as to why that would be. And really it's just all the oats nutritionally are the same. Some, like quick oats, they don't take as long to cook as the steel cut would. So, depending on how much time you have and it really just comes down to texture, the texture that you like, and the time you have to cook, but nutritionally, they're pretty much the same."

He also talked about what path you should follow if you’re trying to lose weight, gain muscle or both.

"If you're trying to lose weight, we'd be looking at just restricting your calories in general along with working on that physical activity at the same time, which can then lead towards that muscle gain as well. With trying to build muscle, you're looking at having a little bit more protein just to help with that gain. It's often not as much as what people think. So, in the general American diet, we do get enough protein just in your diet from that to help with building muscle. If you're looking at doing both though, at the same time, cutting back just a little bit on calories can help out. So, you're likely not to lose weight as quickly, but in that act of building muscle, you won't see the scale drop as much, but you might see your body change a lot."

Coming up on Friday, Ben will talk about heating healthy during the holidays.
