Diet Tips from Memorial Medical Center Registered Dietician Ben Mohr, Part 8

Wednesday, November 16th, 2016 -- 10:58 AM

-When it comes to a proper diet, navigating all the different roads of information can be difficult.

I spoke with Ben Mohr, Registered Dietician at Memorial Medical Center, and he answered some common questions people have when it comes to their diets. Ben said you shouldn’t avoid fruits just because they have sugars.

"You never really want to cut out fruit just because of sugar. Because the sugar from fruit is a little bit different from the sugar you'd get in a soda or a juice or something like that. Because the sugar you're getting from a fruit, that also comes with added fiber, which when you have the fiber in with the sugar it can help slow the absorption so you don't get that big spike in your blood sugar like you would with a juice or a soda."

He also talked about eggs.

"It's always going back and forth in the world. One year it's good for you. One year it's bad for you. Recently, the USDA they just cut out the restriction of how much cholesterol you should have in a day. And that's saying you don't have any heart problems or cholesterol problems. So now, eggs are good for you. They have a lot of amino acids in there, which can help you repair muscle. It's a good source of protein. You don't want to have too much in a day because it still has saturated fat in it, which is the bad type of fat.

Coming up on Thursday, Ben will talk about the types of oats.
