Diet Tips from Memorial Medical Center Registered Dietician Ben Mohr, Part 7

Tuesday, November 15th, 2016 -- 11:40 AM

-When it comes to a proper diet, navigating all the different roads of information can be difficult.

I spoke with Ben Mohr, Registered Dietician at Memorial Medical Center, and he answered some common questions people have when it comes to their diets. Ben talked about how much caffeine is considered too much.

"What's recommended is 400 milligrams in a day. That can sound like it doesn't mean anything, but, to kinda put that into perspective, a cup of coffee has about a little less than 100 milligrams of caffeine. So, if you're drinking coffee all day you can still go over that amount. A soda has about 60. Tea is about 30. And those energy drinks that you hear about it's about 80 per 8 ounces. So, if you get a big can, you can be looking at 160 milligrams of caffeine in one of those."

He then explained what happens if you do have too much.

"You can start getting jittery. Some people can get nauseous just having too much. Heart arrhythmia, those are when you have way too much without much water in it as well. Just generally keeping yourself awake at night and not getting enough sleep can be a big problem from having too much caffeine."

Coming up on Wednesday, Ben will talk about the sugars in fruits.
