Diet Tips from Memorial Medical Center Registered Dietician Ben Mohr, Part 3

Wednesday, November 9th, 2016 -- 6:30 AM

-When it comes to a proper diet, navigating all the different roads of information can be difficult.

I spoke with Ben Mohr, Registered Dietician at Memorial Medical Center, and he answered some common questions people have when it comes to their diets. Ben talked about whether you should eat before a workout.

"I think anytime that you're going to go work out, you should always have food beforehand. Without food, you're likely not to have as good as a workout, so you need to fuel that workout that you're about to go do. Say someone goes and they don't have anything to eat beforehand. The workout is likely to be not as good. It'll be slower because you'll be burning fat, which does sound good. But, if you think about it, like you're going for a run. Say you have 10 minutes and you go for a mile, it might take you 10 minutes if you haven't had anything to eat because it will take you longer and you won't have as much energy versus if you were to have a little bit of something beforehand. You might be able to go farther in those 10 minutes which would help you burn more calories."

As to when you work out, Ben says that doesn’t matter.

"As long as you're going out there and you are getting some exercise then that's really going to be the best fore you. The recommendation is that you get in at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, so that's where you're still able to hold that conversation with someone. So, 2.5 hours a week is what's recommended. And if you're going a little bit harder then it's 75 minutes per week. As long as you're getting some physical activity in."

Coming up on Thursday, Ben will talk about eating before bed.
