Diet Tips from Memorial Medical Center Registered Dietician Ben Mohr, Part 2

Tuesday, November 8th, 2016 -- 10:47 AM

-When it comes to a proper diet, navigating all the different roads of information can be difficult.

I spoke with Ben Mohr, Registered Dietician at Memorial Medical Center, and he answered some common questions people have when it comes to their diets. Ben talked about using protein shakes for weight loss and with a workout.

"With something like the protein shake it is a supplement. So, that's something to look at if you need to supplement your diet. There's different types of protein shakes, there's regular protein shakes that people take after working out to help rebuild the muscle. And then there's also protein shakes that are more meal replacement that people will often use to help with weight loss. I try to avoid those as much as possible just because with having a shake as a meal versus an actual meal, you don't actually learn how to adjust your diet for the long term and after you lose that weight, you're likely to put it back on because you'll go back to your normal eating patterns after the shake."

There’s been a lot of discussion on regular soda vs. diet soda. Ben offered his thoughts.

"There's a lot of controversy between the diet and regular soda. You'll hear a lot that diet soda is worse for you then regular soda because of the artificial sweeteners. The FDA says the artificial sweeteners have been proven safe to consume. So, I have seen people lose weight when they do just make that switch from regular to diet soda. That's often when they're having a large amount of soda in a regular day. So, a regular can of soda can have as much as 150 calories. So, if you're drinking a couple, three, five of those a day. Just cutting back and going to a diet soda having the zero calories versus all those in the regular, that will help you with that weight loss."

Coming up on Wednesday, Ben will talk about if you should eat before you work out.
