Diet Tips from Memorial Medical Center Registered Dietician Ben Mohr, Part 1

Monday, November 7th, 2016 -- 11:42 AM

-When it comes to a proper diet, navigating all the different roads of information can be difficult.

I spoke with Ben Mohr, Registered Dietician at Memorial Medical Center, and he answered some common questions people have when it comes to their diets. First, Ben explained a little of his history.

"I was born and raised in Neillsville. I graduate in 09 and then I later went on to UW-Stout to get my dietetics degree and then later to Mt. Mary in Milwaukee to go through my internship to become a registered dietician. Then I recently became a dietician after passing my exam in July and started at MMC in September."

Then, one of the first questions he answered was the effectiveness of low carb diets.

"Low carb diets, they can work, depending on how low you go. With carbs, there's also water in your body, so when you cut out carbs you can cut out water at the same time, which would initially help you with that weight loss and look good on the scale. But you still do need carbs in your diet. Generally, it's anywhere between 45-60% of your daily intake should come for carbs. But just depending on the types of carbs that your having can really help with the weight loss. So, those whole grains can help keep you fuller longer versus those refined grains, which would be the white breads and sugary foods."

Coming up on Tuesday, Ben will talk about the necessity of proteins shakes.
