(Jonathan Anderson, USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin) -A chef infected with a rare strain of norovirus is most likely the source of an outbreak that sickened 54 people at a Marshfield hotel earlier this year, according to a new report. The rash of illnesses emerged after a corporate gathering April 16 at Hotel Marshfield, 2700 S. Central Ave. Wood County and state health officials launched a months-long investigation into the outbreak and released their findings Thursday in a 26-page report. Their conclusion: People were likely exposed to the virus around the same time and from a single point, which is consistent with a foodborne outbreak, according to the report.
What's more, the chef who prepared and plated the meals was also one of the first ??" if not the first ??" to develop symptoms. And while the chef did not notice those symptoms until after the banquet, he or she was likely already shedding the virus while handling food during the event, the report states.
