One Item Removed from Cut List if Marshfield School District Referendum Fails

(Mike Warren, WDLB) -Voters in the Marshfield school district will go to the polls next month with one less position at stake if a November 8th referendum fails. The Marshfield Board of Education voted last night to remove a social worker position from a list of reductions that would have to be made if voters reject next month's 12-million dollar budget override referendum. Board member Dorothy Chaney said the elimination of the social worker position from the cut list was a must, in order to ensure the protection of the district's most vulnerable students. The social worker position comes with a price tag of 87-thousand dollars. It was one of many proposed cuts totaling three-point-one-million dollars. That list still includes one-point-two million dollars in cuts to the instructional staff budget, including the elimination of the district's gifted and talented coordinator.
The reductions list also includes the elimination of all Middle School sports, the elimination of high school sports with the lowest enrollment, and drama and musicals--including Madrigals--would be cut at the high school as well. The Marshfield Board of Education is asking district residents to vote "yes" or "no" on exceeding state revenue limits by three-million dollars for four years. Without the referendum dollars, the district is looking at a budget deficit of three-point-six million dollars. That's because an existing 10-million dollar override referendum expires next year.
