Raising In-State Ungraduate Tuition Approved

Saturday, October 8th, 2016 -- 7:21 AM

University of Wisconsin System regents have approved raising in-state undergraduate tuition in the 2018-19 school year if Republicans lift their tuition freeze.

The Associated Press reports that Gov. Scott Walker and GOP legislators have frozen resident undergraduate tuition for four straight years. Walker has said he wants to extend the freeze for at least one more year but hasn't committed to maintaining it beyond that. The regents adopted a plan Friday during a meeting at UW-Eau Claire that calls for raising tuition by no more than the rate of inflation in the 2018-19 school year if Republicans lift the freeze then.

Annual resident tuition at the system's four-year schools currently ranges from $9,273 at UW-Madison to $6,298 at UW-Green Bay and UW-Parkside. UW-Stout tuition is $234 but that school also charges per credit.
