(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -For the third time this year, Gov. Scott Walker is asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency to conduct a preliminary damage assessment of public infrastructure in Wisconsin because of flood damage. The latest request is for the 12 counties that experienced flash flooding and mudslides in mid-September, which caused more than $14 million in damage to roads and other infrastructure in western and central Wisconsin. The governor issued a State of Emergency following the flash floods and mudslides, in which two people were killed in Vernon County. Other counties that were part of the request include Adams, Chippewa, Clark, Columbia, Crawford, Eau Claire, Jackson, La Crosse, Monroe, Richland and Trempealeau. FEMA teams will begin assessing damage to public infrastructure this week.
Meanwhile, Walker's office also confirmed last week that eight northern Wisconsin counties have been designated agricultural disaster areas after July flooding that destroyed more than 30 percent of crops. The disaster designation covers the primary counties of Ashland, Bayfield, and Iron, as well as the five neighboring counties of Douglas, Price, Sawyer, Vilas, and Washburn. Severe storms and flooding on July 11-12 left many farm fields under water or with saturated soil. The result was destroyed crops or sharply reduced yields.
