Marshfield School Board Holds Listening Session on Referendum
Friday, September 30th, 2016 -- 9:10 AM
(Mike Warren, WDLB) -More than four-dozen people went, but only four spoke, as the Marshfield Board of Education held a listening session last night on its proposed override referendum in November.School district administrators, principals, parents and others gathered at the Marshfield High School library to get more information on the district's four-year, 12-million dollar budget override referendum, scheduled for November 8th. District Business Manager Pat Saucermann said the referendum would replace an existing referendum that expires next year. Without that referendum, the district is facing a three-point-one million dollar budget deficit--thus the reason the cuts are being proposed.
The proposed reductions list totals three-point-one million dollars. That list includes one-point-two million dollars in cuts to the instructional staff budget, the elimination of all Middle School sports to the tune of 140-thousand dollars, the elimination of high school sports with the lowest enrollment, and drama and musicals--including Madrigals--would be cut at the high school as well. The Board is now scheduled to vote on the proposed reductions list at its next meeting October 12th. The Marshfield Board of Education voted last month in favor of asking district residents to vote "yes" or "no" on exceeding state revenue limits by three-million dollars for four years. There will be a second listening session on the referendum and the proposed cuts on Monday at 6 p.m. in the Marshfield High School library.
