Clark County Health Task Force Insurance Seminars, Final
Friday, September 16th, 2016 -- 11:47 AM
-A task force in Clark County is working to get more residents enrolled in Health Insurance.I spoke with Rebecca Rosandick, the Public Health Specialist/Health Educator of the Clark County Health Department, and she explained why people should have health insurance.
"Well, there are two main reasons: cost and health outcomes. So, there are a number of expenses that people without health insurance have to be concerned with. The first are those out-of-pocket medical expenses for things like accidents or others things that people aren't expecting. If an individual is not enrolled in BadgerCare or a market place plan, they are responsible for paying the full amount of cost on their own, which can add up really, really quick. All though no plans to be sick or spend time in the hospital, like I said, accidents and sudden sicknesses can happen to anyone and fees associated with these types of events, you don't really plan for them, so they're hard to estimate. You might not have money put away. So, according to Healthcare.gov, people without insurance pay, on average, twice as much for care in the long run."
"Now we can look at the health outcomes of not being insured. One is access. If people don't have access to health care, they will go longer without care because they think they might be able to get better. But when they finally go in for treatment, they might be sicker than they originally were."
Rebecca ended our interview by encouraging residents to attend their upcoming workshops with the first being Wednesday, September 21st at the Clark County Courthouse in Neillsville from 5:30pm-7pm.
