It's Going To Be Another Big Year for Wisconsin Crop Producers

Sunday, August 21st, 2016 -- 6:05 AM

It's going to be another big year for Wisconsin crop producers.

According to the USDA's latest crop production summary, farmers in the Badger State are expected to harvest about 554 million bushels of corn this fall with yields averaging 173 bushels per acre. If realized, both the production and yield would be the highest on record. Corn acreage is estimated at 4.2 million acres, of which 3.20 million of the acres will be harvested for grain.

The report further noted that soybean production in Wisconsin is forecast at 101 million bushels. This would also be the highest soybean production on record, breaking the previous high of 92.6 from 2015. The August 1 forecast yield is 52 bushels per acre, which would be 2.5 bushels above last year. If realized, it would break the previous record for yield set back in 2010. And planted acreage for beans is estimated at an all-time high of 1.95 million acres in Wisconsin this year.

Nationally, corn production is forecast at 15.2 billion bushels, up 11 percent from last year. Yields are expected to average a record 175.1 bushels per acre. U.S. Soybeans are expected to reach 4.06 billion bushels this year, up three percent from 2015; with yields expected to average a record 48.9 bushels per acre, up 0.9 bushel from last year.
